Last year in my drawing class at SCAD, we had to draw pastries using pastels. It was my first foray into drawing with color (I had previously just down black and white charcoal), and well, my artwork didn’t really come out as great as I had wanted it to be (see here).
I came across Joël Penkman‘s work via Frankie Magazine and couldn’t help but be reminded by that art project. If only I had known about Joël then; I could have taken so much inspiration from her work!
From paintings of delicate confections to party food to kitschy items and other bits and bobs, her clean backgrounds and (mainly) bird’s eye views remind me of illustrated versions of some of my favorite Instagrams.
