American Sweetheart

This is one of those shoots that was created purely out of inspiration and wasn’t sponsored by a company or anything like that. Austin asked me if I wanted to do a shoot in the LightGrid that concentrated on dramatic and directional lighting. I do the whimsical quirky style a lot, so it was nice to take a break from my usual style and to try something different.

At the time I was conceptualizing, styling & directing the shoot, I was watching a lot of I Love Lucy on Amazon.com Instant Video. I see the influence pouring into the way I styled the overall looks. Gotta love classic America in the 1940s and ’50s.

I pulled the outfit above from Wallflower which if you live in San Francisco you neeeed to check out. I’ve known Victoria & Lindsey, the owners, for a few years and have so much respect for them chasing their dream of opening a vintage boutique and just going for it. These gals aren’t afraid of anything. (This is what the space looked like when they just bought it.)

Part of the reason I like working with Shana so much is not only does she do gorgeous retro hair and makeup, but she also has an incredible collection of vintage clothing. (And we’re the same size… see where I’m going here?) The other two dresses are borrowed from Shana’s repertoire of vintage. Shana loves seeing her own clothes come to life in a photo shoot and I love styling her vintage beauties.
