You may have noticed posting’s been a bit light on the blog these past few weeks. That’s no accident. While I normally post 4–5 times a week, I’ve cut back to posting 2–3 times a week because otherwise it just wouldn’t be sustainable. And I want to give you guys good, quality content—not just something I threw together for the sake of having a post up that day. Let me tell you why my time has been divided…
Right now, I’m working on the Oh My Drifter rebrand/new site layout (will go live soon! yay!), running this blog and a big final project for school. Yes, yes. You all know that. But something else exciting is in the works. Something I’ve been working on with my mom for the past year. Y’all ready for this? (Spoiler alert: we’re kinda giving it away in the photo above.)
My mom (Dawn) and I are starting a brand new business together!
It’s a line of organic, gluten-free and vegan skincare and it’s called Drifter Organics. We’re starting off with three body butters made with shea + cacao butters, carrier oils and various essential oils: pure, natural and just plain ol’ good stuff for you.
Oh yes. I alluded to it here when I said I bought the domain for something very exciting. And here when I said my mom and I started making our own body butters because my skin was too sensitive to use anything else. And finally here on Instagram when I said I was getting inspiration for a new creative venture I was working on with my mom. But it was so sneaky I doubt you picked up on it. Or maybe you’re a super sleuth and you did. 😉 I’ve been wanting to tell you guys for so long, but things took longer than expected and it was hard to gauge our timeline and I didn’t want to spill the beans too early in the game if it didn’t end up working out at all.
There have been so many hurdles to jump through in starting a business I had never anticipated—especially in the cosmetic industry—and I feel like everything is finally coming to fruition.
In two weeks, my mom and I are doing a two-day photo and video shoot for Drifter Organic’s Kickstarter campaign that will go live in February 2016. Our official e-commerce site will launch in May 2016. Last week, I ordered our labels (no more makeshift paper labels!) as well as some goodies that will be rewards for the Kickstarter campaign. This week, my mom and I have to make 100 jars of body butters and order props for the photo and video shoot. We also have to write and rehearse what we’ll say in the Kickstarter video. I’m in so deep with Drifter Organics work (+ the Oh My Drifter rebrand, school and this blog), I figured it was time to explain why things have been a bit slow on the blog lately.
Drifter Organics is coming together and it’s amazing. I told my mom I feel like I’ve been pregnant with a (business) baby, except it’s been 12 months instead of 9 and it will end up being 19 months total since our skincare line won’t launch for real until May!
Does this mean I will no longer be blogging? Absolutely not! (If I were quitting blogging, why would I be designing a new blog layout?!) Drifter Organics is a sister business to Oh My Drifter. I will be adding a beauty column to the blog where I share natural beauty tips, tricks, tutorials and other skincare DIYs.
I’m dying to talk more about the inspiration behind Drifter Organics, the trial and error of developing our recipes and how we make our body butters, but in the interest of keeping this post somewhat short(ish), I’ll save that for a future post.
In the meantime, head over to drifterorganics.com to join our mailing list and be the first to know the latest updates + news before I even write about it on the blog, see exclusive content I won’t ever share on the blog, get special deals and maybe even get to try our body butters before we launch!
Also follow @drifterorganics on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to catch up with us daily and see behind the scenes pics. You bet we’ll be snapping tons of behind the scenes stuff of our photo and video shoot!
