Fade to black

Seriously guys, what is UP with me this year? This is the third time I’ve worn black in an outfit in four months, which is probably more times than I wore black for the entire past four years… or something like that.

These are some pictures I took over at Jaclyn‘s apartment. Her apartment has a window that creates beautiful light and shadows during different times of the day. She’s started a series called “Hall Portraits” where she photographs different people in the same spot by the window in her apartment at different parts of the day. It’s really interesting to see the location stay consistent, but people’s coloring, personality, energy, and the weather make each photo entirely different. We shot these photos early in the morning.

Jaclyn is very slow and deliberate with her photos. She shoots exclusively with film and doesn’t edit any of her photographs, so she needs to make sure everything looks good in frame. We only spent about 20 minutes taking these images, but she had a clear vision and wasn’t afraid to direct me. As a fashion photographer myself, I love modeling for other photographers because I get a chance to experience other photographers’ shooting styles. Some photographers will give you free reign: “Do pretty, graceful, soulful model-y stuff!” After Jaclyn composed the shot, she pretty much gave me the freedom to move around and make my own facial expressions within the boundaries of where she placed me. We had many silent moments (save for music playing in the background) while I waited for her to compose the shot or focus her lens or adjust her angle.

Photographing with film definitely makes you more intentional about composition instead of pressing the shutter a million times and hoping something good comes out of the bunch. (I’m guilty of the latter when it comes to my digital photos.)

Jaclyn, thanks for photographing me in the only black shirt I own. I’ll model for you any day—although I may have to buy myself more black clothes first.
