Over the years, my style has evolved—and thankfully so! (So glad I outgrew my awkward, cringe-worthy early teenage years!) At the heart of my style is the girly/vintage vibe, but I’m also super drawn to casual, effortless, mismatched, unpolished, avant-garde normcore (for lack of a better word) looks. Over the weekend, I wore this outfit. And I loved it. And I felt me in it, but it’s also so very different from cutesy, feminine ensembles I usually share. An outfit like this is more risky and gutsy for me, so I think I’m getting more confident in what I choose to wear.

I used to obsess over curating everything I wore, making sure the color palette matched to a T with everything else I own, but I’m the type of person who has a lot of interests, so maybe I have a lot of styles when it comes to fashion, too? I definitely feel like I encompass many styles when it comes to my graphic design and fashion photography work. My friend Alex wrote about this when she rebranded her blog from Larkspur Vintage to Okay Andie. They say you’re influenced by who you hang out with and I think a lot of it has to do with where I’ve been spending my time online. I’ve been browsing a lot of online indie shops that all have the same relaxed, imperfect, oh-hey-this-outfit-doesn’t-match-but-I-don’t-care vibe. I’ve been trying to find a common thread between the girly looks and the casual looks and I think it’s that they are both whimsical and vintage-inspired, just in different ways? Am I making any sense at all? Am I overthinking this like I overthink everything else? Just wanted to get my thoughts out there.

Don’t get me wrong: Girly and whimsical will always have my heart; I’m just now sharing it with laid-back and irreverent. Off-beat and quirky, always. 😉

  • I adore this look! Socks and sandals are the best. I get what you mean. I think this specific look is equally whimsical and casual. It’s a perfect combination!

  • thanks for sharing this micaela! i totally resonate with this. i feel like i have so many styles and i have been trying to embrace them all – sometimes i feel like a little boy, sometimes i want to dress like an old woman or a serious dude or a casual gal. i think it’s only marvelously human for us to indulge in all the ways we want to explore our identities through style. so keep trying it all! i know i’ll be doing that myself 🙂

    • Yes, all of this! It’s hard to balance all different styles and still maintain a brand. I’m trying hard to not overthink it and just go with the flow!
