California Standing Still

For the past few years, California has been in a serious drought. Two years ago, I think we got maybe five days of rain total? Not good. It mainly only rains in the winter and the amount of rain we get in the winter sets us up for the entire year to come. This past winter, we got a lot of rain—probably more than we’ve gotten these past three years combined! When spring came along, legions (or myriads) of wildflowers bloomed in Southern California. California (and the rest of the world) stood still, in awe of the miraculous “super bloom” (you could even see it from space!). Wildflowers in Northern California by my home bloomed, too, but not as multitudinous as in Southern California. Thousands flocked to Southern California locations to see the rare bloom in person and capture it with their cameras.

Being that these flowers have been dormant for years and I didn’t know when the next super bloom would occur, I took a weekend trip to Southern California to visit the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve.

I photographed my long-time Internet (now turned in real life) friend, Melissa. She was one of my OG blog followers—before Instagram was even a thing, can you believe it? It was SO fun not only meeting her, but collaborating on something creative. Melissa is an English teacher who has an amazing aesthetic and a jewelry business of her own.
